A Gateway between Pegasus Mail and KA9Q
Introduction
This software, GWIN.EXE and GWOUT.EXE, is a gateway between
Pegasus mail and KA9QNOS. This means that standalone users
can use the full features of Pegasus mail together with the
access to the Internet given by KA9Q.
Whereas Pegasus users on a Novell network with a direct
connection to the Internet can use Charon to transport and
convert their email, standalone users have very little
sophisticated email support. The two GW programs are, if
you like, a standalone version of Charon when used in
conjunction with KA9Q.
License
In the spirit of the distribution of Pegasus this gateway is
freeware, but copyright Support pc Ltd, and as such can be
used without restriction except that it cannot be supplied as
part of a commercial installation and no payment can or should
be charged for its distribution.
Installation
The Gateway depends upon environment variables to discover both
the Pegasus mail directory structure and the KA9Q Spool directory
structure.
Place both the GW programs, GWIN.EXE and GWOUT.EXE, in their own
directory called, for example, GW.
Run PCONFIG in the Pegasus mail directory and create a User Gateway
using the following entries as a guide:-
Pegasus Mail Login & Interface Maintenance
User Gateway Definition
Gateway Name [GW ]
New mail path d:\gw\gwin.exe ~8
Is a program to run? Y
New mail search mask *.CNM
Outgoing mail path d:\gw
Run for outgoing mail d:\gw\gwout.exe ~8 "(~p)"
Filename format ~d~d.txt
Run to validate address
Reply address format
Accepts SMTP addresses Y
Simple message headers N
UUEncode attachments Y
Burst messages N
Strip GW name Y
Check new mail every 30 seconds
(Standalone configuration)
The directory for GW can be anywhere as the Pegasus mail program
will execute it based on the information placed in the Gateway
definition Screen.
As long as GW is the first defined gateway that can accept
Internet addresses then a user need not use a gateway address,
GW\name@fred.co.uk, to make sure that it gets sent.
You also need to configure for a standalone user specifying the
user directory for new mail, and that should be the user directory
below the PMAIL directory. For example, the user SLUCY should have
his mailbox below the PMAIL directory and new mail should also be
configured to be in this directory.
i.e. D:\PMAIL
|SLUCY
|*.CNM
Having configured Pegasus Mail all that needs to be set up are the
environment variables for the sets of directories.
SET GW=D:\GW ; The Gateway directory
SET PMAIL=D:\PMAIL ; The Pegasus Mail Directory
SET KA9Q=D:\SPOOL\MAIL ; The KA9Q Spool Mail directory
The GWOUT.EXE reads the AUTOEXEC.NET file in the root directory
of the drive where the SPOOL directory is located for the host
name. So no complicated addressing needs to be done in Pegasus.
Operating the Gateway
As long as the above installation has been followed then the
operation of the gateway should be transparent and run totally
from Pegasus.
After running NET.EXE to connect to the Internet and any mail is
gathered, run Pegasus and collect that new mail. Pegasus can also
be installed to automatically collect new mail on startup.
Pegasus will run GWIN.EXE with the current user name as the
parameter. GWIN then discovers if that name.TXT exists in the
MAIL directory and if so splits its contents into separate mail.CNM
files in the users directory.
In order to send mail correctly define the Address options for
replying to include the Reply-To field but NOT the To: field. If
the configuration is setup correctly then sending the mail by
Control-Enter will write the mail to the GW directory and call
GWOUT with the current user name as the parameter.
GWOUT will then construct the mail properly for KA9Q and build it
in the MQUEUE directory.
In order to physically send the mail onto the Internet NET.EXE will
have to be run as usual. It is possible to run this from Pegasus
using Sender.PM. However, this is not recommended as the memory
requirements for NET.EXE are quite high.
Support
As this is freeware then the amount of support that can be given
is necessarily small. However, questions or suggestions can be
mailed to gw@sport-pc.demon.co.uk.
FUTURE
I don't particularly think that there is much that can be usefully
added to this. It is very simple but does the job. I haven't
tested this as a network based installation. The only difficulty
that I can envisage would be in opening the SEQUENCE.SEQ files
concurrently.
If this becomes a requirement then I will add it, but in that case
it will probably need site specific tweaking which is possible but
not on a freeware basis!
HISTORY
1.0 Personal use release. No public copy should have this
version number.
1.1 First public release.
1.2 A problem reported about using full names
i.e. (Simon P. Lucy) fixed by allowing a second parameter
to GWOUT.EXE which is the full name string. To use this
feature modify the Run for outgoing mail, line in PCONFIG
to include "(~p)". The quotes are very important as they
allow the parameter to be seen as one string.
